Target Stores, Minneapolis, on Sept. 7 announced plans for an expanded online merchandise offering, including a push into the toy market for the holiday season. The Dayton Hudson Corp. discount unit said items purchased on the site (www.target.com) can be returned to any of its 881 stores. The move comes as Wal-Mart Stores, eToys, Amazon.com and others prepare for a major holiday battle. Other retailers making more aggressive online selling moves in time for the holiday season include Restoration Hardware, Corte Madera, Calif., a national home furnishings specialty retailer. Meanwhile, Spiegel announced it will help in the launch of an e-commerce joint venture between upscale London retailer Harrods and direct mail company Otto Versand.
