TBS's Asia Pacific head leaves

Published on .

HONG KONG -- Turner Broadcasting System is shunting Mike Byrd, head of its Asia-Pacific operation, back to the U.S. to an unspecified position.

The announcement came as a surprise to the industry, coming just over a year after Mr. Byrd took up the Hong Kong-based post; but Turner says his repatriation was "always planned for 1998." A successor for his role as international Asia Pacific president and managing director will soon be sought, according to Turner.

Mr. Byrd took over in Asia Pacific from Ted McFarland, who left suddenly at the end of 1996. Turner says Mr. Byrd will now be working on "various projects" at TBS' Atlanta headquarters.

TBS distributes CNN International and TNT & Cartoon Network in Asia.
