Technology ad pages in the 445 publications tracked by Adscope, Eugene, Ore., fell 9% in the first half of 1999, vs. a year ago, to 125,292. Ad spending for the period dropped 3% to $1.7 billion. Microsoft Corp. was Adscope's top advertiser, upping its spending 5% to $73.8 million. Second-place IBM Corp. was up 48% to an estimated $63.1 million.
