Techies tout VR on the Web

Virtual reality on the Web is getting a big boost from major initiatives from Silicon Graphics and IBM Corp. Silicon Graphics, a backer of the Virtual Reality Modeling Language standard for the Web, said it would offer two new tools--WebSpace Author and WebMagic Pro--to create three-dimensional online applications. Separately, IBM said it it working with Worlds Inc., producer of the Worlds Chat Web-based chat environment, to develop business-oriented applications for online virtual reality. Among those using the technology is Visa International, which will create 3-D applications for its customers that approximate a "personal home visit."
