TECHNOLOGY/COMMUNICATIONS BBDO WORLDWIDE TAKES THE ENTIRE CATEGORY WITH TWO POWERFUL SPOTS , TO GREAT APPLAUSE

Published on .

Apple Computer-PowerBook: "Jazz Musician" ( BBDO Worldwide; Pytka; :30). In the category winner, a horn-playing jazz musician composes on his PowerBook. Scenes of him playing and using the computer are interspersed, while he says, "There's no formula for dreams ... Ideas don't come on schedule ... Creativity can occur anywhere anytime."

He closes with, "I tried to explain this to the IRS ... and it's a good thing I kept all of my records."

One of a number of spots in a "What's on your PowerBook is you" campaign showing people in a variety of occupations.

Federal Express Corp.: "Applause" (BBDO Worldwide; Gartner Grasso; :30). The boss, who obviously is a bully, strides onto the office floor. In front of everyone, he bellows at a young woman, "Murphy, that package you sent to Denver-it never got there!"

She slides a disk into her PC as voice-over says, "Introducing Tracking Software, from Federal Express." She eyes the screen and informs the boss that the package was "picked up at 5:20 last night, delivered at 9:42 this morning, and signed for by Pete Donovan. Shall I call him for you, sir?" "Never mind," he harrumphs, stalking out.

When he's gone, the staff gives Ms. Murphy a standing ovation.
