Tele-TV inks $1B deal with Thomson

Baby Bell consortium Tele-TV signed a $1 billion deal with Thomson Consumer Electronics, under which Thomson will provide TV set-top boxes and hardware for wireless digital TV. Tele-TV expects to begin offering local broadcast TV, basic and premium cable channels and limited interactive services in markets on the East and West coasts starting next year. Tele-TV's partners, Bell Atlantic, Pacific Telesis and Nynex, each will develop wireless systems known as Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Systems for deployment in their markets. Tele-TV expects to serve up to 3 million homes.
