TEXAS LAWYERS OK REVIEW OF ADVERTISING BY STATE BAR

Published on .

AUSTIN, Texas-Attorneys have voted to give the State Bar of Texas authority to review their print and broadcast advertising.

If approved by the Texas Supreme Court, the rules, backed by 88% of licensed lawyers who voted, will ban emotional ads and prohibit using non-attorneys as lawyers in ads. The new regulations will require that ads be filed with the state bar for committee review before or during use of the ads, with some minor exceptions. Lawyers found in violation could be reprimanded, suspended or disbarred.

The bar would also have the authority to review brochures and other marketing material.
