Time Inc. buys into Synapse

Published on .

Time Inc., New York, purchased 20% of Synapse Inc., a Stamford, Conn., provider of subscriptions and customer management services for magazines. Time Inc. owns 50% of American Family Publishers, once an invaluable source of new subscriptions for magazines but which hasn't performed as effectively as it once did. Industry observers consider Synapse, which markets its subscriptions through affinity partners like credit card issuers and catalog companies, to be one of the most promising new sources of subscriptions for publishers. The deal means Time Inc. magazines will be the only titles pitched to callers of catalog companies affiliated with Synapse.
