Time Inc. settles suits over sweepstakes

Time Inc. on Aug. 24 agreed to settle charges brought by state attorneys general in 48 states and the District of Columbia that its sweepstakes mailings were deceptive, by refunding $4.9 million to consumers who spent $500 or more in 1997, 1998 or 1999 on magazine subscriptions. Earlier last week Publishers Clearing House agreed to a separate settlement.
