Toyota to develop car for Indian market

Published on .

BOMBAY -- Toyota Motors will debut in India a new multi- purpose passenger car specially designed to suit Indian conditions, the company told the Press Trust of India in Tokyo.

The launch vehicle will incorporate factors like Indian business and social needs, the consumer's ability to spend, road and weather conditions and pollution issues. Toyota in June will finalize its Indian partner, the local plant site and production commencement date.

"In India families are large and [the] family car has to be spacious. A stylish but tough wagon-type vehicle could be suitable," Hideki Otaka, Toyota's projects planning director for Asia, Africa and Europe, told the news agency.
