of defrauding the federal government with overbillings for advertising services White House drug office account.

The pair, Thomas Early and Shona Seifert, pleaded not guilty to the charges in early January. Both were present for today's conference in the Manhattan courtroom of Judge Richard Berman.

Separate representation
Mr. Early and Ms. Seifert, who will be tried together, are represented by separate lawyers.

The defense lawyers told the judge they were reluctant to set a trial date because so much work needed to be done in reviewing the 80 boxes of office and financial records that make up the central evidence in the case.

Judge Berman, however, indicated that he intended to have a speedy trial and set Sept. 7 as the start date.
