(April 12, 2001) -- Tribal DDB, the interactive unit of Omnicom Group's DDB Worldwide, laid off 24 of its 500 employees, a company spokeswoman confirmed today.

The cuts, which were isolated to the U.S., were taken in preparation for a pending merger or acquisition.

"Truly, our plan is to optimize the fiscal resources we have to focus on mergers and acquisitions," the spokeswoman said. She would not identify potential partners but said they were not among shops affiliated with Omnicom, which owns minority stakes in Agency.com, Organic and Razorfish, and also has interactive properties within its advertising agency groups. -- Catharine P.
