Tribune may sell education unit

Tribune Co., Chicago, retained Salomon Smith Barney to explore strategic alternatives for its education group, Tribune Education. The move was sparked by the impending merger with Times Mirror Co., Los Angeles. "With our pending merger with the Times Mirror Co., we are focused on our core media businesses of broadcasting, publishing and interactive,'' said John W. Madigan, Tribune chairman, president and CEO. The education unit, formed in 1994, generates annual revenue of $400 million; it includes Everyday Learning/Creative Publications Group; Instructional Fair Group; Landoll Inc.; NTC/Contemporary Publishing Group; and the Wright Group.
