TRUE NORTH ADDS GLOBAL DUTIES FOR PEIGH AND BESS: ROLES RESPOND TO BJK&E DEAL, BUSINESS GAINS

Two top executives at Foote, Cone & Belding, Chicago, have been promoted to worldwide responsibilities, to handle growth within FCB and parent True North Communications.

True North promoted Terry Peigh to exec VP and director of True North Services, overseeing back-office and support functions for all True North units. He was previously worldwide account director on Kimberly-Clark Corp. and Cadbury Schweppes.

Chicago office President Ron Bess, as expected, was promoted to president of the worldwide agency (AA, May 4).

Mr. Bess, who had been with FCB in the 1970s, rejoined the agency in 1996 when True North acquired Bayer Bess Vanderwarker, Chicago.

He will remain based in Chicago.

Mr. Peigh is charged with setting up a global support operation integrating the units acquired in True North's acquisition of Bozell, Jacobs, Kenyon & Eckhardt. His successors on Kimberly-Clark and Cadbury Schweppes have not yet been named.

He succeeds Mitch Engel, who resigned in January as president of True North's Associated Communications Cos. After the BJK&E acquisition, that position was assumed by BJK&E CEO Chuck Peebler.

Mr. Engel has remained as a consultant to True North Chairman-CEO Bruce Mason, helping complete the merger of BJK&E into True North.

BESS AIDS CHAIRMAN RYAN

Mr. Bess will support agency Chairman-CEO Brendan Ryan in overseeing worldwide operations, which have grown significantly over the last year.

Mr. Bess will be succeeded by Brian Williams, formerly exec VP-managing director at Leo Burnett Co., Chicago. Mr. Williams had been part of the team leading one of Burnett's new "business units," responsible for accounts including Kraft Foods, Hallmark Cards and Dean Witter, Discover & Co.

No successor has been named.
