TV Guide plans to resign from the Magazine Publishers of America, effective Dec. 31. The magazine informed the MPA of its impending exit in Bermuda at the American Magazine Conference, co-sponsored by the MPA and American Society of Magazine Editors. Since Gemstar/TV Guide International Inc.'s "business initiatives relate to several different industries, we have evaluated our trade association alliances for 2001,'' and that evaluation led to the decision to leave the MPA, John O'Reilly, president of the TV Guide magazine group, said in a statement read by a spokeswoman. Mr. O'Reilly stressed that, while Gemstar/TV Guide "continues to evolve into a multi-industry, multiplatform'' company, "we still retain a strong commitment to printed products.'' Through a spokesman, MPA President-CEO Nina Link expressed regret over the decision made by TV Guide, a member of the MPA for the past three years. Ms. Link added that "we will make every effort to convince them to rejoin.''
