U.K. Magazine group expands in U.S. market via Imagine Media

LONDON--Future Publishing Holdings, a U.K.-based publisher of PC and video games magazines, has agreed to buy Imagine Media, a U.S. publisher of magazines and web sites covering games, computing and the Internet.

Imagine's single copy retail sales have increased from $4 million to $35 million during the past five years. Based in the San Francisco Bay area, Imagine Media's eight publications sell more than 1.5 million copies each month. Its titles include PC Gamer US, the unofficial PlayStation magazine PSM, Interactive Entertainment trade magazine Games Business and the e-business Business 2.0.

Following the acquisition, Future Publishing Holding now publishes 108 regular magazines and 20 one-shot magazines in the U.K., the U.S., France, Italy and Benelux, selling more than 4.8 million magazines per month with total revenues in 1998 of more than $320 million. It also owns Web networks generating 30 million page impressions monthly.

It's planning to launch 27 magazines and eight Web sites during 1999.
