Published on .

JAKARTA--The first real-time news Web site in Indonesia by U.S. investors has been launched in Jakarta.

The site, is not the first of its kind in Indonesia. But Harry Surjadi, business development manager of the Jakarta-based P.T. Astaga Internet Konsultindo, says it is the first to be fully funded by foreign investors. Mr. Surjadi says the site is backed by U.S. fund companies using venture capital. He declined to name the companies.

There are already two similar news Web sites in the country -- detik.com and satunet.com -- both owned by local companies.

Mr. Surjadi says astaga.com is expected to become the largest Web sitein Indonesia.

Like detik.com and satunet.com, astaga.com offers editorial content onmajor political, business and lifestyle issues relating to Indonesia. Astaga.com also offers free e-mail and is to become a major e-commerce hub.
