UAE Telcom firm appoints France's TF1 for cable TV network

CAIRO -- The Dubai-based Emirates Telecommunications Company, ITISALAT, has awarded France's TF1 a consultancy contract for programming and marketing support for its planned cable TV network.

The pay-per-view network, slated for launch in the United Arab Emirates next year, will initially target 20,000 homes. The two companies are currently finalizing the cable programs, which will offer viewers more than 100 local and international channels, according to TF1.

Officials from both ITISALAT and TF1 could not be reached at press time.

TF1, a major French TV channel, also has a 25% interest in Television Par Satellite (TPS), a digital satellite platform with more than 500,000 subscribers in France. It has launched cable and satellite channels in Europe, and helped TV stations worldwide develop their business.

The companies plan to talk with channel operators and program suppliers next month, in part to solicit business proposals for the new Emirates network.
