USA net's ringing success

"USA Network with the People's Court and Love Connection," an unusual daily interactive program featuring live hosts taking viewers' calls about reruns of the old syndicated daytime TV shows, drew so many calls during its Oct. 24 telecast that USA's phone system crashed. Since it premiered Oct. 16, "USA Live..." received more than 200,000 calls from viewers who were compelled to comment on the day's court cases and love matches.

Separately, USA Networks parents MCA and Paramount held a meeting to decide how they can better exploit USA and fledgling Sci-Fi Channel that resulted in a linkage between Sci-Fi and MCA's Spencer Gifts retails store division, which will begin carrying branded Sci-Fi Channel products. Spencer also will receive on-air and online promotions by Sci-Fi, including a link between Spencer's World Wide Web site and Sci-Fi's Dominion site.
