Web loss widens at Barnes & Noble

Published on .

Barnes & Noble, New York, said its Web site book store, barnesandnoble.com, posted a $13.6 million loss in its fiscal second quarter, ended Aug. 1, compared to an $8 million loss in its first quarter. The company broke its first major ad campaign for the Web operation, via Weiss, Whitten, Stagliano, New York, last spring, a year after the Web site store first began operations. After a review this summer, Barnes & Noble named TBWA Chiat/Day, New York, to handle ads for the Web site and said a significant new campaign would break this fall. Barnes & Noble conventional retail stores posted net earnings of $7.9 million for the second quarter. Total revenues for the quarter rose 9.3% to $675 million.
