New Web search tool from Digital gains popularity

Alta Vista, a Web search "spider" from Digital Equipment Corp., is performing so well that the company is considering taking advertising on the site and licensing the technology.

Digital began testing Alta Vista on Dec. 15. The site now gets 2 million hits a day, the company said.

Digital claims Alta Vista is faster and more complete than other search engines. If traffic continues to increase, it will pose a serious threat to other search services like Yahoo, Lycos and WebCrawler, all of which take advertising.
