Web surfers get a jump on tax season

Tax season has hit early among Web surfers at home, according to Nielsen/NetRatings. Traffic to financial software provider Intuit's group of Web sites and www.irs.gov spiked this past week; traffic to Intuit.com nearly doubled to 608,000 unique visitors during the week ended January 21, compared with 315,000 visitors for the previous week. Total unique visitors to Shopintuit.com jumped 71 percent to 217,000. Traffic to Turbotax.com grew 58 percent to 266,000 unique visitors. Even the government is getting it share of visitors: The official IRS Web site saw its traffic surge 57 percent to 551,000 unique visitors for the week. Surfers spent an average of 12 minutes at the site, with most visitors logging on to the download page for new tax forms.
