Wham-O buys Mattel brands

Published on .

New toy company Wham-O, San Francisco, acquired Mattel's Mattel Sports division, which includes the classic sports toy brands Wham-O, Frisbee, Hula Hoop, Hacky Sack and the Morey and Boogie bodyboard lines. Wham-O was formed earlier this year to acquire and reinvigorate classic toy brands and to promote the development of new toy concepts by inventors. Wham-O is majority-owned by private equity investment firm Charterhouse Group International. Other shareholders include Brown, McMillan & Co. LLC and members of the company's management. Mattel said earlier this year that it would sell its sports business.
