(April 9, 2001) -- Wieden & Kennedy, Portland, Ore., on April 6 laid off 38 employees, or 12% of its 230 staffers in Portland and New York, citing the slumping economy. This was the independent ad agency's first staff cut since 37 people were terminated in June 1998 after Nike reduced spending. In other West Coast job cuts, Clear Ink, Walnut Creek, Calif., laid off 15 employees, or 10% of its staff.
