In late February, Land Rover North America Inc. thought it had a glamorous deal in the making. BLS Limousine of Los Angeles had approached the high-line importer of sport-utes about providing 10 black-on-black Range Rovers to transport some of the stars for the March 21 Academy Awards ceremony. It was a supporting role that Land Rover wanted to play.

Alas, the talks broke down, and the Rovers remained in their garages.
