Honoring the best in newspaper ads

The Newspaper Association of America handed out the Athenas (Award to Honor Excellence in Newspaper Advertising) for general, retail and classified newspaper advertising, as well as a student category.

Crispin Porter & Bogusky, Miami, won the Grand Prize for an ad for the Borders bookstore chain that inserted gift wrapping paper into issues of newspapers around the country. Art director: David Steinke. Copywriter: Tim Roeper.

Peterson Milla Hooks, Minneapolis, showed how the cookie crumbles to win the Silver in the retail category with an ad for Target Stores. Art director: Erika Walden. Copywriters: Dave Peterson, Erika Walden.

Point to Point Communications, Cleveland, won a Gold in the general-advertising category for a campaign for the United Way of Greater Cleveland. Art director: David Cockley. Copywriter: Mike Hudock.
