WorldOnline acquires U.K.'S Localtel

LONDON--WorldOnline, the pan-European Internet communications company, has strengthened its position in the U.K.market following the acquisition of Localtel, the U.K. calls and Internetaccess operator.

The acquisition brings 180,000 customers from Localtel's unmeteredScreaming.net under the WorldOnline services, including 17 channels ofnews and information.

Headquartered in the Netherands, the company has 1.5 million consumersubscribers and 34,000 business clients in 15 countries. The company'smain shareholders include the Swiss-based Sandoz Family Foundation, Inteland Reggeborgh Beheer.

Localtel launched the U.K.'s first unmetered Internet access in November1998 and currently has 180,000 users. Currently, the U.K. market is deliberating between free versus paid Internet subscription models.
