WPP profits rise

London-based WPP Group reported net income of $61 million for the first half of '96, up 61% from a year ago. Revenue jumped 12.7% to $1.3 billion, while the operating margin increased from 9% to 10.1%. Revenue rose 11.1% at Ogilvy & Mather and 8.5% at J. Walter Thompson Co. As expected, Hamish Maxwell, appointed to the board of directors last month, was named to succeed Gordon Stevens as non-executive chairman, effective Oct. 1.
