WPP unveils MindShare media unit

WPP Group merged the media operations of J. Walter Thompson Co. and Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide into MindShare, a global WPP unit that will handle $14 billion in billings worldwide. MindShare will be represented in the U.S. by The Alliance, the existing joint media venture between Ogilvy & Mather and JWT. It will start operating in the U.K. from the first quarter of 1998 and roll out to other European markets; it will also be used as the model for expansion in Asia and Latin America. Dominic Proctor, 41, CEO of JWT London, will be chief operating officer, answering to a board including JWT CEO Chris Jones and Ogilvy Chairman-CEO Shelly Lazarus, along with WPP officers.
