Yahoo! buys Four11, introduces Yahoo! Mail

Yahoo! announced Oct. 8 that it had closed an agreement to buy Four11 Corp., which makes the popular free e-mail service RocketMail, and has a White Pages directory. Trying to increase user loyalty, Yahoo! is kicking off Yahoo! Mail, a free e-mail service using Four11's technology. Yahoo! also sealed deals with Compaq Computer Corp. and Gateway 2000 in which links to Yahoo! will be bundled onto the desktop.

In related search engine news, Lycos beefed up its offerings, adding chat, LycosEmail, instant messaging and a directory to GeoCities homepages.
