Yahoo! buys Web software company for $130 mil

Yahoo! acquired Internet software company Encompass. The acquisition is being accounted for as a pooling of interests and valued at about $130 million. Encompass' software helps PC manufacturers offer easy dial-up Web access. Encompass currently has relationships with Acer, AT&T Corp., Dell Computer Corp., Diamond Multimedia, EarthLink and Hewlett-Packard Co. The purchase helps Yahoo! extend its reach and business model. In related news, Yahoo! launched Yahoo! Health (health.yahoo.com), a site that will offer everything from health news and research to nutritional information.
