NEW YORK -- A somber economy muffled the buzz of many top media executives over the least year, according to Advertising Age's MediaTalk survey.

The study, conducted since 1997 by Delahaye Medialink Public Relations Research, Norwalk, Conn., ranks the leading media players' mentions in a number of media outlets in the year leading up to the Media Mavens Special Report.

While Jon Mandel, co-managing director of Grey Global Group's MediaCom, New York, once again held the top spot with a score of 199, his overall score dropped 14.1% from a year ago, along with scores for all the leading media executives, perhaps a reflection of fewer media outlets available.

Marc Goldstein, president-CEO of WPP Group's MindShare USA, was one executive who picked up momentum, breaking into the top 10 for the first time with a score of 52. Last year Mr. Goldstein, while exec VP-managing director of Interpublic Group of Cos.' Mediaworks, General Motors Corp.'s media-buying agency, was recruited to be president of national broadcast and programming at MindShare before being promoted to his current position.

Mr. Goldstein professes to be still learning about media and marketing. "This business, to some extent, allows us not to grow up," says Mr. Goldstein. "It's been a long time and it's fun."
