The New York Times plans to launch a new Web site early next year called New York Today, designed for people living in, visiting or doing business in New York. At www.nytoday.com, users will find what the Times calls ``the definitive online resource about New York life.''

Chairman-Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. said, ``The New York Times has served our readers in New York for over 100 years. This new digital initiative will be the cornerstone of our service for the next 100 years.''

The site will be advertiser sponsored, primarily from the sale of business directory advertising and new classified products. New York Today will be developed by the New York Times Electronic Media Co. in conjunction with Zip2 Corp. of Mountain View, Calif. Electronic Media Co. already produces the online edition of the newspaper as well as the America Online NYT site (keyword: Times).
