ZD Net adds senior ad sales exec

Ziff-Davis Publishing Co. named Kenneth Evans as director of ad sales and development, a new post, overseeing all ad sales efforts at the company's Web site, ZD Net. Mr. Evans will create a two-person in-house sales team to develop ad packages for the site. He will also oversee the sales efforts of Softbank Interactive Marketing, ZD Net's primary ad rep firm.

Unlike the last time a SIM client said it was creating an in-house sales team, this move at ZD Net does not affect the company's relationship with SIM, said James Savage, ZD Net VP-general manager. Yahoo! earlier this year said it would hire an internal sales staff and reduce its dependence on SIM.

"We're still counting on them to be our primary sales force," Mr. Savage said. "This is not a Yahoo! situation or a precursor to a Yahoo! situation."

Mr. Savage admitted that ZD Net needed a better way to manage its various sales teams, which besides SIM include sales reps from individual ZD Net publications. Additionally, ZD Net has recast its site in a channel strategy, arranging the content by topic instead of by individual magazine.

Mr. Evans joins ZD Net from CMP Media, where he had been senior director of sales and development for CMP's International Media Division.
