Ziff plans TV channel

Published on .

Ziff-Davis said it will start ZDTV: Your Computer Channel, a 24-hour cable channel about computers and the Internet, in the first quarter. The tech publisher is committing more than $100 million and will hire more than 300 people for the channel and a related Web site. Eleven major advertisers, including IBM Corp., Microsoft Corp. and Intel Corp., have each made a "six-figure" commitment to be charter sponsors.

ZDTV faces a big challenge: It hasn't yet signed any cable operators to carry the channel. Blazing Paradigm, San Francisco, will create trade and consumer ads promoting the channel. ZDTV will continue to co-produce a computer show for MSNBC and is developing one to launch this fall on Home & Garden Television.
