After eight years of work with Ogilvy, Mr. Collins, who leads the 35-person unit that once turned a Hershey's billboard request into a Times Square retail store experience, is leaving at week's end to travel. His first stop is China, where he will work with design students.
"I want to be able to go off and examine what the future looks like," he said. "It's hard to imagine the future when the future always needs to get out the door by Thursday at 2 p.m."
While Mr. Collins would not say exactly how long he plans to travel before returning to the Ogilvy fold, he did say that "It is extraordinary to work at Ogilvy. ... I've touched the world's best brands from Coca-Cola to Motorola to Jaguar to American Express to Dove."
Ogilvy declined to comment.
