SAN FRANCISCO (AdAge.com) -- Independent ad agency Butler, Shine & Stern has named Patrick Kiss to the newly created post of managing director.

The 10-year-old Sausalito, Calif.-based shop has 40 employees and $45 million in billings.

Greg Stern, president, said the addition of Mr. Kiss, formerly executive vice president and director of business development at Interpublic Group of Cos.' Foote, Cone & Belding Worldwide, San Francisco, will help the agency move to the next stage of development. Mr. Kiss, he said, will handle business development, client strategy and work on developing internal management and account management.

Mr. Stern said he would continue to oversee broader strategy at the shop as well as client strategy and new business. The hire, he said, "puts us in a different league."

Mr. Kiss, who starts at Butler Shine in January, worked at FCB for seven years. During his time at FCB, he handled accounts for Levi Strauss & Co.'s Dockers and Major League Baseball, among others. He also led the shop's pitch for the five-year, $125 million account for the California Lottery, which is expected to issue later this month a revised request for proposal on the bid.
