Mr. Thompson will oversee key financial functions in the tax department, corporate controller's group and budgeting group. His responsibilities will also include information technology and the company's shared services initiatives.

The two former Pharmacia executives worked together on a number of major corporate deals, including Pharmacia's merger with Monsanto, the subsequent spin-off of its agricultural division and later Pharmacia's sale to Pfizer, which closed in this past April. Mr. Thompson also spent 10 years as a finance executive at PepsiCo and as corporate controller at Whirlpool Corp.
The appointment is Mr. Coughlin's first outside hire but second major financial appointment. Earlier this month, Mr. Coughlin appointed Ramesh Rajan as chief financial officer at McCann-Erickson WorldGroup. Mr. Rajan is McCann-Erickson's third chief financial officer in the past 12 months. He had been senior vice president and director of financial operations at Interpublic.
