CHICAGO (AdAge.com) -- In a move that ends recent speculation that it might be closed, the Chicago office of J. Walter Thompson today named Barry Krause its new president.

Mr. Krause has been chairman-CEO of Publicis, New York, since Oct. 1, when Publicis Groupe merged its Chicago operations into its New York office as part of a massive reorganization

"Barry has deep roots in the Chicago market and brings experience, passion and energy to his new post," said Bob Jeffrey, president of JWT North America, in a statement.

Vacant post
The JWT post had been vacant since September, when Brian Heffernan resigned under pressure as the agency was struggling on the Kraft Foods and SABMiller Brewing accounts.

JWT has considered at least a dozen candidates, mostly from Chicago marketers and agencies, according to executives involved in the process.

Mr. Krause had been rumored as an early candidate, but was initially ruled out after he took the Publicis job.

JWT is part of the WPP Group.
