NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- WPP Group's J. Walter Thompson USA promoted Mike O'Malley to president of its Detroit and Houston offices.

He arrived in April as executive vice president from General Motors Corp. He remains global business director on Ford, but adds non-Ford accounts to his duties.

Don Topping rises to managing director under Mr. O'Malley from executive director of North America. He succeeds Jeff Ewald, a JWT veteran, who leaves in October. Separately, the Detroit office laid off 10 non-Ford staffers.
