Mr. Hammersley, named CEO of the agency's U.S. operations in 2001, will be succeeded by Tom Bernardin, currently Lowe's president and chief operating officer. Mr. Bernardin came to Lowe in February when Lowe merged with another Interpublic agency, Bozell.
No turnaround for agency
Mr. Hammersley came to Lowe in 2001 from the U.K., where he headed Lowe's London office, to stabilize and reposition the agency following a string of client losses and management upheaval. But the turnaround never materialized for a variety of reasons, and client attrition continued throughout 2002 as the agency lost accounts for Heinken USA, Verizon Communications and Coca-Cola Cos.' Diet Coke, among others.
In February, Lowe, which operates two offices in North America, was merged with sibling Bozell.
A spokeswoman for Lowe said Mr. Hammersley is not moving to another agency position at this time. Mr. Hammersley was not available for comment at press time.
