NEW YORK ( -- Shannon Kerns, longtime talent-payment and business-affairs expert, died Dec. 9 in Santa Monica, Calif. after a five-year battle with cancer. She was 56.

Ms. Kerns most recently served as exec VP of the payroll and business-affairs company Team, where she headed the firm's talent division since 2004. Prior to that, Ms. Kerns served as partner at Cast & Crew Entertainment Services, and even formed her own payroll-services company, Payments Plus, in 1982, which went on to become a multimillion-dollar concern.

Ms. Kerns was an expert in complex talent matters, with a reputation for her fluency in the SAG and AFTRA labor agreements and the nuances of the contract provisions, according to a company statement. "She was a huge force in our company," said Gerry Schwartz, Team's president and senior partner. "Shannon was a consummate professional and her passion for her work was unmatched, but she also had spunk and a great sense of humor that endeared her to so many people. We've lost a friend and family member."
