Big plans, costing big bucks, for Newsday this fall. On Sept. 28, the big Long Island daily launches a nine-month multimedia history of the island with radio minutes, partnership packages, a 225-part in-paper series, ads, promotions, marketing, a slick video, the works. They say it's the biggest project undertaken in the paper's 57 years.

At Publishers Weekly, they've got a new associate publisher, Michael E. Evans, previously eastern ad director for Variety (also a Cahners pub). Evans' new boss, Publisher Fred Ciporen, says, "Bill collectors should continue to reach Mike at his Variety office."

Weider Publications reports Men's Fitness just had its largest issue ever, carrying 61 ad pages in the June issue (up from 35 last year), and that the July number of Muscle & Fitness will carry 103 pages compared with last July's 53. Hot books.

Publisher Julie McGowan of Food & Wine claims that over the last two years her circ is up 8% contrasted to Bon Appetit's 0.5% increase and Gourmet's loss of just under 1%.

At Adshel, the N.Y. street furniture design and installation outfit, Samuel E. Zimber has been named VP-sales & marketing.

Ruth Tooker joined Vanity Fair as San Francisco manager. She'd been with Conde Nast previously, but most recently with Wired.

GQ hired three new folks: Shawn McCormack as special projects director, Melissa Collins Rice as fashion marketing director and Norman H. Miller as senior account manager.

Icon, which bills itself as a "thoughtstyle magazine for men," hired a new managing editor, Robin LaSalle. She's a veteran of Hearst and more recently with New York Times Custom Publishing.

Spike Lee's people tell me I was naughty to suggest his commercials for the upcoming (now June 28) Tyson-Holyfield rematch were scrapped and redone. Minor changes were made, I'm told, and the finished spots go out June 14.

Mademoiselle named Maria McDaniel to the new post of sales development manager.

Tom Evans says the June/July issue of Fast Company, the year-old Mort Zuckerman-owned mag, will carry 112 pages of ads. Pas mal.

Ruth Whitney and Mary Berner, editor and publisher of Glamour, hosted a cocktail party at the Four Seasons restaurant in Manhattan for new beauty editor, Charla Krupp.
