CHICAGO (AdAge.com) -- MillerCoors has tapped veteran Pepsi executive Rick Gomez to lead its Coors family of brands.
Mr. Gomez -- who was Pepsi's VP-marketing for waters, enhanced waters and juices, a portfolio that includes Aquafina, Tropicana and Propel -- "will own the overall brand strategy and positioning for Coors Light and Coors Banquet," according to a memo from Chief Marketing Officer Andy England. "Working with sales leadership and other key stakeholders, he will drive marketing programming for these brands from conception through execution, and he will be responsible for driving the profitable growth of each brand."
The move is effective July 13.
Mr. Gomez takes the helm of Coors Light -- MillerCoors' largest brand -- at a delicate time. The brand has posted 15 consecutive quarters of growth and recently surpassed sibling Miller Lite as the No. 2 premium light beer after Bud Light, but that growth has appeared to slow thus far during the crucial summer selling season. It grew only 1.6% in the four weeks ending June 14, a marked slowdown from the brand's earlier pace, according to Information Resources Inc.
Mr. Gomez, 40, held a number of different titles during his run at Pepsi, including chief marketing officer of PepsiCo Food Service and chief marketing officer of Tropicana Beverages. He's a graduate of Dartmouth College and began his career at Quaker Foods.
