Tim Baxter, a 10-year Sony veteran and most recently senior VP-strategic marketing, will join Samsung as exec VP-sales and marketing, consumer-electronics division. He will report to J.S. Park, president of Samsung's consumer-electronics division.
Mr. Baxter's title is new; however, the top sales-and-marketing post for Samsung Americas have been vacant since July, when Peter Weedfald left to become Circuit City's chief marketing officer.
Led Sony's Blu-ray efforts
Mr. Baxter, 45, recently led Sony's Blu-ray efforts and will lead Samsung's consumer-electronics marketing efforts in an increasingly crowded, competitive and noisy American market.
"I look forward to continuing to build upon Samsung's strong market presence, which the company created with its innovative products, solid trade partnerships and talented people," Mr. Baxter said in a news release.
Mr. Baxter was named Sony corporate senior VP-marketing in May 2004, reporting directly to Chairman-CEO Howard Stringer. In May 2005, however, Mr. Stringer brought in another marketing executive, Andrew House, a veteran from Sony Computer Entertainment, the PlayStation division, as global chief marketing officer.
