If you know what you're looking for, the Internet is a great tool," says New York-based Allison Cheston, co-managing director of Designscout.com. "If you don't know what you're looking for, it can be a nightmare." Hence the Webs ite she recently launched with Swiss-based Stephan Nobs -- a potential one-stop shop for marketers who are seeking a design company. The site offers unusually detailed search functions whose parameters include size, location and de sign/product category. Results can provide hotlinks to design companies with Websites of their own, or brief profiles of those not yet online. Cheston, 38, and Nobs, 37, new-business development veterans of the design industry, had signed up about 50 companies at press time, including international giant Landor Associates, and they hope to have a couple of hundred subscribers on board by year-end. Subscription fees can run from $300 to $6,000 per year, based on the size of the design company; there is no charge to users. Advertising on the site is being considered, says Cheston, and she assures that Designscout.com will be "heavily marketed to the business world" via direct mail and strategic alliances with design associations.
