New York-based Curious Pictures continues to branch out into kids' markets with Teletubbian elan. First there was the HBO series I Am Curious (see Creativity, March '99), and now there are Curious Puzzles and Curious Bonz, GloBonz and ExoBonz -- sort of like Tinker Toys for future osteopaths. Not only are they getting distribution at hot spots like Noodle Kadoodle and FAO Schwarz stores, as well as Amazon.com, but Bonz has been named one of the Best Toys of the Year by Parents magazine. "The reception has built slowly, but there's a vibe around now that this is an interesting product, and they're developing a design niche in a specialty market," says Curious executive producer Richa rd Winkler. How did it all start? "We've been doing so much character design and original character creation for so long, the idea of doing toys has been around for a while. But that's all been work for hire. With toys, the idea w as we'd own the concept. In a perfect world, these would have synergy."
