NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- WPP Group has replaced its outgoing New York-based chief human resources director, according to an executive with knowledge of the appointment.

Beth Axelrod, a principal at management consulting firm McKinsey & Co., Stamford, Conn., will replace Brian Brooks, who is set to leave WPP in November. Ms. Axelrod's title will be chief talent officer, and she is scheduled to assume her new position in May. It is expected that she will also join WPP's board.

Mr. Brooks and Ms. Axelrod will share duties until his departure. Mr. Brooks is also a member of the WPP board.

Mr. Brooks is leaving WPP to join Interpublic Group of Cos., where he will succeed C. Kent Kroeber, 62, senior vice president, human resources.

Mr. Brooks joined WPP in 1992 and has been responsible for recruiting senior executives throughout the group. WPP filed a claim in the U.K. two weeks ago to enforce a two-year non-compete clause in Mr. Brooks' contract. The case will be heard July 1.

Mr. Brooks refused comment. Calls to WPP and Ms. Axelrod were not returned at press time.
