Sally Kennedy Assumes New Role at Struggling Agency Network

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- WPP Group's Y&R Advertising, which has been struggling in North America, the world's largest ad market, has created the role of chief marketing officer for the region, the agency said today.

San Francisco office
The network promoted Sally Kennedy into the role. Ms. Kennedy, who joined Y&R in 1998, was senior vice president of marketing and sales for the agency's San Francisco office. She will now split her time between San Francisco and New York.

In the past year Y&R has lost numerous large accounts, including that of Ford Motor Co.'s Jaguar marque and Sony Corp.'s Sony Electronics division, both out of Y&R's Irvine, Calif., office, and also the Computer Associates account, which was handled out of the New York office.

The network also failed to reel in substantial new business to cover the losses.

Helped strengthen S.F. office
Ms. Kennedy was part of a team, however, that has been successful in building up the San Francisco office despite a number of other ad shops in the city having closed because of the tough ad market on the West Coast.

The San Francisco office helped Y&R retain Cadbury Schweppes' 7-Up brand after a review. The team also won Foster Farms, a major regional poultry company, in a pitch against the marketer's longtime agency, Omnicom Group's Goodby, Silverstein & Partners of San Francisco.

'Instrumental' in global account'
Penny Baldwin, managing partner, Y&R San Francisco, said Ms. Kennedy was also "instrumental" in moving the agency's relationship with Jacuzzi "from a project into a global account."

Ms. Kennedy said she sees her new postion primarily as a marketing role. "We can do a much better job of marketing the agency," she said.
