the new role by the agency's chairman-CEO, Michael Patti, who joined the New York office in March.

"I thought John would be the opposite of me: I'm the fresh eye and fresh perspective, while John is more grounded in the realty, the history, the rhythms of the agency's operations and the ins-and-outs of how clients work," Mr. Patti told AdAge.com.

Handled Colgate account
Mr. Morris, 44, was the managing partner on Colgate-Palmolive, a key account for the agency. He will continue to handle those responsibilities while also running Y&R's day-to-day operations.

Hiring a No. 2 to help run the agency was expected. Mr. Patti had discussed the need for the position with Michael Dolan, the former chairman-CEO of both Y&R Advertising and Young & Rubicam (Mr. Dolan left the agency in May).

Mr. Morris's advertising career began in 1982 in the media planning department of Y&R. Two years later he transferred into account management, working over the years on a variety of clients, from Kraft to New York Telephone to Xerox. He also worked at Y&R sibling Wunderman on AT&T. Since 1998, he's been chief of Y&R's Colgate business.
